Robert Hapgood of Lymington

Robert Hapgood was born in Lymington in 1842 and was the fifth son born to George and Sarah Hapgood. Based on the evidence of his gravestone, it seems that he married a lady called Martha (b. 1845). The date and place of the wedding are not known as is any background on Martha.

Martha died on 14 October 1907 and Robert followed on 13 May 1915. They are buried in the churchyard at Lymington Parish Church together with Caroline Hapgood (b. 1816, d. 1890), who may possibly have been an aunt of Robert.

Occupation

The Lymington section of Kelly's Directory for 1895 shows a Robert Hapgood of Buckland Terrace as a gas fitter and electric kettle fitter. Given that the present Robert's father had run an ironmongers business, this is a plausible association.

It should also be noted that his nephew, Arthur Henry, was cited as a hot water fitter in the 1935 edition of Kelly/s. Perhaps the nephew took over the business on the death of Robert in 1915?

Thoughts for future research

There are many basic facts that could added by examination of marriage registers and other basic sources.
