Occupation

He left Lymington and became a senior civil servant. He was a First Class Clerk in Ministry of Works and Public Buildings and was Private Secretary to six First Commissioners of Works (including Herbert Gladstone, son of the famous Prime Minister). He was awarded the CB 1909.

This is the Henry James Hapgood whose letter appears in the American book The Hapgood Family by Warren Hapgood.

Thoughts for future research

Henry's work as a senior civil servant may have left some evidence in archives and books relating to British political life in the 1890s and 1900s. In particular, his association with Herbert Gladstone is potentially interesting as the latter was a substantial figure in the Liberal Party of that era - often as a political fixer working behind the scenes. I am not clear if that would have had any impact on Henry James Hapgood, but it would be interesting to explore.
